{kbc’s: best for…}

We’re really lucky to represent such a wide range of clients. Whenever we get a call from a journalist telling us about a story angle, we usually have a client with a perfect product to feature. Whether it’s about wintersports, cuisine, value, families, anniversaries, or even high end luxury, one of our clients will have a story to tell. So here’s the 2009 KBC ‘Best For’ List.
Best for … Families
For a family holiday with a difference, Atlantic Canada offers the excitement of a long haul destination without the long haul flight. Flights from London to Halifax take under 6 hours and the time difference is only four hours. When we went out last month, we didn’t suffer any jet lag in either direction. It’s a real outdoors destination and, although not brilliant for young children, it’s great for older kids who can go sea kayaking, fossil hunting, whale watching, iceberg trekking – even bear spotting, if you’re very lucky.
If your kids like their entertainment laid out for them, their dream holiday will be found in Disneyworld, Florida. Travel City Direct is one of the UK’s leading tour operators providing low cost family holidays to Orlando from London and Manchester. They’ve got a wide range of hotels and villas to stay in, all over the Orlando area and you can also buy all your attraction passes through them. If you want to save your money here, leaving you more to spend there, TCD is a great idea. They’ve also just launched a new programme of great value family holidays in the Caribbean. Check it out.
If you prefer to stay closer to home and like your luxuries, Mesmear in Cornwall is brilliant for kids. There’s loads to do in the surrounding areas, plus they’ve thought of everything, with personalised playboxes, buckets and spades, a games room, a heated swimming pool and even a drying room for wet suits of young surfers.
Freedom Leisure has 19 leisure centres all over Sussex and Kent. They do great things for the kids; they’ve just turned the water red in the pools at Hailsham and Rye for Halloween! The holiday kids’ clubs are also absolutely brilliant for working parents, and there’s a junior gym and bowling alleys at Hailsham and a climbing wall at K2, Crawley.
Best for … Ski and Snow
When we want to ski, we head for Alberta. The Rockies are absolutely spectacular and you can do all kinds of other ‘snowy’ things like boarding, bobsleighing, ice-climbing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and skating. But our favourite thing in Alberta is the ice walk through Maligne Canyon in Jasper. You can actually hear the river water still flowing under the ice as you walk.
Best for… Food
There’s lots of places in the world which lay claim to great seafood. But in Atlantic Canada it’s not only delicious, it’s also cheap and it’s everywhere! You can eat lobster every day if you like. But we suggest you mix it up a bit with crab, fried clams or mussels (beautiful just steamed, but also delicious in a Thai sauce at The Tempest in Wolfville, Nova Scotia). The fish is also great; freshly caught and cooked really well, even if you have it in the pub or, as I did, at the airport!
If you’re more of a meat eater than a fish fanatic, check out the Alberta bison. A delicious meat with quite a strong taste, but really lean so very good for you.
Our favourite dinner in the Florida Keys would be a starter of steamed Stone Crab claws, followed by fresh fish we’d caught ourselves, then rounded off with a massive slice of Key Lime Pie, ideally bought from Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe in Key West.
At Mesmear in Cornwall, if you stay at The Mill, you get your own personal chef who will cook you a full English in the morning, afternoon tea and a three course dinner with wine. And the food is fresh and delicious. That’s a real treat.
Best for … Sightseeing
If you haven’t been to Washington, DC, make it your 2010 priority. It’s a fantastic city, packed with things to do and loads to see. Home, of course, to Mr Obama, the White House has to be seen. But the city’s also full of brilliant museums, monuments and galleries full of political and social history. Museums range from the Smithsonian American History Museum to the Spy Museum and the Newseum – showcasing the history of news communication through the years. The Smithsonian museums are also free to enter.
The rest of the Capital Region is also great for sightseeing. Our favourite spots are the Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia – step back in time to experience life in 18th century America, then nip over to Jamestown and learn all about the early life of the English settlers – and Chesapeake Bay in Maryland – a perfectly picturesque harbour.
Best for … Singles
Back to Washington, DC. Because there is so much to do, Washington is a great choice for a solo holiday. There’s loads of museums, galleries and sights to see. Or you could take a segway tour and follow the trail of Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol. But I suggest you read it first!
One of the most popular gay destinations in the US is Key West. The parties, clubs and bars of Duvall Street are fantastic and there’s a really relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Thousands of holidaymakers from all over the world travel here on their own every year – it’s a great place to go to meet people.
Closer to home, Freedom Leisure’s centres welcome singles coming along to exercise and meet like minded people in their classes. Check out Spinning, Body Combat, Pilates, Boxercise or even Pole Dancing!
Best for … Value
There’s loads of value options available to visit all the destinations we represent. But our biggest value client is certainly Travel City Direct. We can’t actually work out how they can give you a holiday in Florida for £399 per person. Surely the flight on its own should cost more than that?
Another client with brilliant value options is Keith Prowse. They have this clever knack of bundling up lots of sightseeing and entertainment options into one tiny price. At the moment, you can buy a Stay & Play ticket which gives you a ticket to a top West End Show, a three course dinner in a good restaurant, a London Eye Flight or ticket to Madame Tussauds and one night in a great 3* central London hotel – all for just £99 per person. We’re thinking of going to see Sister Act (which is supposed to be a riot), but you can Christmas it up with Aladdin or A Christmas Carol if you’re in the mood for some festive spirit.
Best value for businessmen is Select Apartments. Serviced apartments are a lot cheaper than hotels and, when you’re on an extended stay because you’ve relocated from another part of the UK or from abroad, the last thing you want is to be eating in a hotel restaurant every night. If you’re in a Select Apartment, you can get your local supermarket to deliver and cook your own. Much cheaper. And usually nicer.
Best for … Entertainment
Destinations all over the world. Theatre tickets, sporting events, shows, exhibitions, attraction tickets, excursions. There’s really no excuse not to make the most of your holiday, or indeed your life, when there’s Keith Prowse one click away on the web. Just browsing their site makes us want to fling on our glad rags and get out into Theatreland or, better still, hop on a flight to Vegas and see a show.
For a full on holiday, packed with entertainment, take the family to Florida with Travel City Direct. Disneyworld, Universal, Seaworld, Aquatica and Busch Gardens are the most well known parks to visit, but the whole holiday can be full of entertainment, with cinemas, restaurants and water parks all over Orlando.
Best for … Luxury
If you want your pampering in the UK, go to Mesmear for a truly luxurious stay. If you stay in the Mill, you get your own housekeeper and your own chef! It’s a bit like a top end chalet arrangement, but in the heart of Cornwall. Go on, treat yourself.
Our favourite luxury hotel in Maryland is the Inn at Perry Cabin in St Michaels. It’s an Orient Express hotel and a beautiful spa resort, frequented by the stars on the shores of Chesapeake Bay.
The Fairmont at Lake Louise in Alberta has one of the most spectacular views in the world. It truly takes our breath away every time we visit.
The Florida Keys and Key West has lots of high end properties. The Cheeka Lodge in Isla Morada is just about to reopen. The food is amazing and it’s right on the beach with its own nine hole golf course and a spa to die for.
Best for … Nature
The great outdoors is what it’s all about in Canada. Alberta is the gateway to the Canadian Rockies so, for huge vistas of mountains, lakes and fantastic clean air, it can’t really be beaten. Look out for grizzly bears, ground squirrels, bighorn sheep and plains bison, or go birdwatching to see the great horned owl, endangered whooping cranes and rare trumpeter swans.
Atlantic Canada is surrounded by the sea so, unsurprisingly, whale watching is a big pull to the region. There’s nothing more exhilarating than spotting that first ‘blow’ then waiting for the back and the tail to emerge from the sea. Aside from the whales, there’s also the icebergs to spot, fantastic wildlife such as bears, deer and puffins, and an array of beautiful national parks. And the trees… thousands of them laid out before you. Go in October and see the Fall Colours; like big splats of red paint across the landscape. Amazing.
If you prefer to see your nature underwater, head for the Florida Keys & Key West. Diving is really big in the Keys and the fish and coral reefs are truly spectacular with warm waters and hundred of great dive sites.
